Most people have at least once in their lives stayed in a hotel. When checking into a hotel, you are given a key to your room and sometimes a small gift. These gifts are usually things like a small bottle of shampoo or conditioner, a loofah, or sometimes even a bathrobe. Have you ever wondered if it is ok to keep a hotel’s bathrobe?
It’s a question that many people ask themselves at the end of their relaxing stay at a nice hotel. The answer is not as simple as you might think. There are a few things to consider before making this decision.
First, think about why you want the robe. Do you simply love the feel of the fabric or the smell of the laundry detergent? Is it worth the risk? We will give you detailed answers based on the answerers we have gathered all over the internet.
We will get into the details later on in this article, but for now you have to understand that it is not ok to keep a hotel’s bathrobe and no matter what your reasons are because you can easily make angry people who own this bathrobe right now, but more on that later.
Let’s start with my personal opinion, and experiences from traveling all over the world in 2019 with my partner. In my opinion, people should not keep hotel’s bathrobes, and later on, we will tell you why.
Why I can’t take a bathrobe from a hotel?
I’ve stayed in many hotels, and I’ve always had the same internal debate when it comes to the bathrobes. On one hand, they’re so soft and luxurious, and I feel like a total queen when I wear one. On the other hand, I know that I’m supposed to leave them behind when I check out. But why? Surely the housekeeping staff can just wash them and have them ready for the next guest.
As it turns out, there are a few reasons why hotel bathrobes are meant to be left behind. For starters, they’re usually not very clean. Even if they look clean, they’ve probably been worn by dozens of people and laundered who knows how many times, so they are definitely not brand new!
Bathrobes can be worth even around 100 USD, but after a few uses, their value should drop drastically. But even If we say that a regular bathrobe at your hotel is worth around 30 USD, then it can make a huge change to the price of your hotel stay.
If for example people stay only one night for 50 USD per night, and they will take away that bathrobe with them, the expenses for the hotel can skyrocket and be even doubled.
Sometimes we can find a stay for less than 30 USD where we will get a bathrobe for our stay, so taking it will make it a huge loss for the hotel you are staying in.
Can I be sued for taking a bathrobe from a hotel?
The answer may surprise you. Yes, you can be sued for taking a bathrobe from a hotel! Here’s what you need to know about this potential legal issue.
If you take a bathrobe from a hotel without permission, you’re technically committing theft, which is often also called stealing. And while the value of a bathrobe is usually fairly low as we have stated above, if you’re caught and charged with theft, you could face some serious consequences.
Just to be clear, hotels don’t want to sue their customers, so they often call and try to negotiate, or they simply add the price of the bathrobe to the recipe after visiting the hotel.
For instance, you could be fined or even jailed, depending on the value of the stolen item and the laws in your state. So it’s definitely not worth risking it just for a free bathrobe! If you want one, just ask the hotel staff if they can provide one for you.
It’s very risky, and I wouldn’t do that or even recommend anyone to try that. We all should try to be fair with each other, and if they don’t want you to do that, then you should definitely not try to. How would you feel when someone took something from your garden or garage without asking you for permission? If you would feel bad about that, then you should not do that to others.
What do people take from hotels?
A hotel is a place where people go to stay when they are on vacation or on a business trip. However, what some people don’t realize is that when they take things from a hotel, they are actually stealing. This can include anything from the towels and linens to the silverware and even the furniture.
From my own experience, I can tell that sometimes when you enter your new hotel apartment you can easily say that some small things are missing, like for example, slippers for the robe, or even a remote control for your TV. Sometimes the remote controller is definitely a custom one because the original one was stolen before.
If you’re caught stealing from a hotel, you may be asked to leave and may even face criminal charges. So next time you’re tempted to take something from your hotel room, remember that it’s not worth the risk.
Also, often items that are often stolen in hotels are, slippers, bathrobes, bedding, pillows, and many more items that fit into the person’s luggage, but we would like to prevent people from doing that.
Final Thoughts – Is It Ok To Keep A Hotel’s Bathrobe?
In conclusion, it is up to the hotel whether or not you can keep a hotel’s bathrobe. If you’re interested in taking one home with you, it’s best to ask ahead of time or at the front desk when you check in, but unfortunately most of the time they won’t let you keep it.
From my own experience, hotels don’t like to let visitors keep things like towels, slippers, or robes, so we should accept that. In 99% perfect of the hotels where I stayed, it was not acceptable to keep a hotel’s bathrobe.
Many hotels will simply ask you to not do that, and if you do, then the hotel can charge a small fee or even sue you for stealing it. So, if you’re looking to take a souvenir home from your hotel stay, be sure to ask about their policy on bathrobes first.
